Here’s the next superfood you need in your diet.
Beetroot juice, according to health experts, could treat a multitude of health issues–including high blood pressure, cancer, and the risk of dementia.
For instance, researchers recently found that people who drank at least 8 ounces of beetroot juice daily had lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure. This led to improved health overall, especially for older adults who combined this with other healthy lifestyle habits.
Drinking this everyday is also great for boosting your exercise performance, as it helps widen and relax blood vessels, thanks to a compound called nitrate, found in beetroot.
Its ability to improve blood flow also helps decrease the risk of certain diseases.
Take dementia for instance, which, in a 2011 study, remained a low risk factor in people who consumed beetroot juice as part of a high-nitrate diet. Their rate of cognitive decline decreased, leading to more alertness and better memory.
But nitrates aren’t the only reason to drink up. It also contains a compound called betalaine, a water-soluble antioxidant which may attack free radicals. Some researchers believe free radicals can lead to cancer.
But if that doesn’t have you sold yet–did you know it’s also a great diet drink?
Yes, it’s true! Drink to your heart’s content for a huge boost in antioxidants and nutrients without the extra calories. Just one cup yields 58 calories.
