The soothing sounds of rain, wind, or even gentle classical music help many of us feel calm.
But the effects aren’t just mental. Emerging research now shows it could help us overcome physical pain too.
In a new study published in Frontiers in Neurology, mice with inflammatory pain treated with ibuprofen, a common pain reliever, had significant pain reduction when they listened to classical music. They listened to 3-hour segments per day, and the effect was immense: Their pain response decreased by 93 percent.
On the other hand, mice who were treated only with pain medications continued to experience serious pain, most of which ibuprofen could not alleviate.
Now, imagine that: An easy, quick way to amplify the effects of your favorite pain medication.
To reap these rewards yourself, try listening to music in a quiet environment. As it soothes you mentally, it also works to reduce pain signals in your brain, reducing physical pain as well.
